'Electric Dust' is a piece I created during a workshop led by Fabio Hendry from Studio Ilio (now Hot Wire Extensions). Hendry developed a technique of creating solid artefacts with hot wires aggregating waste powder from SLS 3D-printing and sand. With this technique, he creates a range of intricate sculptural and functional works.
With the time and scale constraints of the workshop (1 day, small size output, etc..), my intention with this work was to find the simplest wire shape that would generate the 'largest' closed volume, while retaining a minimalist quality. As well, I wanted to welcome any element of surprise and uncontrolled outcome. The shape that came out of the box felt instantly intimate and warm, as if its presence was necessary - a minimalist void.
Apart from some sanding once it cools down, the piece doesn't require further processing.
