Upstairs is an interactive sound installation that spread ghostly snippets of classic film dialogues in the staircase of an old cinema. It was commissioned by the Pixel Palace / Step Sequence art programme at Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. As cinema visitors walked up and down the staircase, they triggered surprising and unexpected narratives. Voices were taken from three movies that now belong to public domain: His Girl Friday (Howard Hawks), Freaks (Tod Browning) and Plan 9 from Outer Space (Ed Wood). The installation was running for two and a half months, and ended with a live remix of the installation performed together by both the artists and the public.
